shela house, lamu

Shela House is a restored colonial-era village house of great character that has accommodation for 9 to 11 people. It is well shaded with plants, and is built on 3 floors around an open courtyard and ancient gardenia.

Ancient Lamu doors open into an entrance hall and inner courtyard that is edged by a baraza sitting and eating area.

accommodation

Two staircases lead to the 5 en-suite bedrooms - 3 double bedrooms, a room with two large single beds, and another smaller single bedroom.

There is also a nursery room with a cot and two childrens' beds, adjacent to the master bedroom.

facilities

A second floor dayroom and terrace provide additional lounging areas with a small library of books for all ages.

Relax on the 2 rooftops with hammocks and sun beds - or in the walled garden across the passageway. From here one has a view over Shela Village and the channel between Lamu and Manda Island. This is where you can relax, play cards, listen to music, have your sundowners... or just gaze out at the night sky.

Shela house is a two minute walk away from the beach.

catering optons

There are 2 different catering options available:

  • full board
The house cook will do all your catering. He will bake bread, suggest menus and cook excellent Swahili fish dishes. Basic foodstuffs, fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit are available in the local Lamu market, while other supplies are flown in from Nairobi. Fish, lobster, crab and fresh oysters can be ordered.

  • self catering
If you choose this option, the cook will still do all your shopping and keep a record of your expenditure for every meal he prepares for you. Please bring luxury food items and condiments with you. The kitchen is well equipped with gas cooker, fridge, deep-freeze, bottle cooler, icemaker, icecream machine and liquidiser. Sodas, beer and wine can be bought locally, but spirits should be brought along with you.

staff

Shela House has 3 staff - two stewards and a cook. A maid can be available to help with children at an extra cost. The resident manager will help to ensure you have everything you need, assist you with menus and also help organise local excursions.

communications

Complimentary Internet facilities are available in Shela House. Phone, computer and printing services can also be arranged.

linen & laundry

Bed linen, mosquito nets, house towels and beach towels are supplied. In case of a self-catering booking, laundry is charged to the you. However, if the house is rented on a full board basis, the laundry service is included.
