shela beach house, lamu

Shela Beach House is a large, cool beach front house in Lamu that can accommodate 12 to 14 people. There are four double rooms and one dormitory style quadruple, all en-suite.

On the first floor, raised above beach level, there is a stunning, edgeless fresh water swimming pool. It has a bar area and low comfortable baraza seats.

Up the first flight of stairs is a large dining and living room, leading out onto an alfresco terrace, shaded by huge entwined acacia and baobab trees.

Another door leads onto the wooden deck above the pool – a perfect dining area – and to two double bedrooms with their own private terraces.

The third floor comprises two double bedrooms plus a children’s room with 4 large Lamu four-poster single beds and an open terrace with space for sunbathing.

From the rooftop with its bar, lounge and two swinging beds you can enjoy panoramic views of the whole Lamu channel, watch the fishing dhows return, dolphins pass and the moon rise.

On the hilltop, in the dunes behind Beach House, one can enjoy sitting in the gazebo with a stunning view of the Indian Ocean and the shoreline of the neighbouring Kitau on Manda Island.

catering optons

There are 2 different catering options available:

  • full board
The house cook will do all your catering. He will bake bread, suggest menus and cook excellent Swahili fish dishes. Basic foodstuffs, fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit are available in the local Lamu market, while other supplies are flown in from Nairobi. Fish, lobster, crab and fresh oysters can be ordered.

  • self catering
If you choose this option, the cook will still do all your shopping and keep a record of your expenditure for every meal he prepares for you. Please bring luxury food items and condiments with you. The kitchen is well equipped with gas cooker, fridge, deep-freeze, bottle cooler, icemaker, icecream machine and liquidiser. Sodas, beer and wine can be bought locally, but spirits should be brought along with you.

Shela Beach House has 4 staff - two stewards, a cook and a swimming pool attendant. A maid can be available to help with children at an extra cost. The resident manager will help to ensure you have everything you need, assist you with menus and also help organise local excursions.

Complimentary Internet facilities are available in Shela Beach House. Phone, computer and printing services can also be arranged.
